The shot showing the view of the sunrise over Emerald City was done in several parts. Original photography was taken of the New York skyline. The 8-inch diameter Styrofoam apple was motorized and shot on a blue screen. The four principals were also photographed in front of a blue screen. A night view of New York was painted by Al Whitlock and the principals matted into the shot. The night shot was faded and the original day photography was faded in at the same time. The special effect shot of the apple was overlaid. The scene required six painted elements, 13 film elements, and 40 passes through the matte shot camera and optical printer.
